Our 53-year journey has been completed, but our fuel supply of R-5 superconcentrate is alarmingly low, having used the bulk of it in transit. The titanium shielding has also melted at the nosecone of the ship, leaving an indent approximately 2.3 metres thick. However, all circuits are operational, and we have (coughs) have been able to compensate for the lack of fuel to the generators by activating our solar panels upon planetfall, where the radio signals appear to originate. The planet we have landed on appears to be dead. The air is breathable, as our technical report indicates: (shuffling of papers) 62% Nitrogren, 28% Oxygen, 7% Hydrogen and equal traces of Helium, Water-Vapour and Carbon Dioxide, but there are also abnormally high levels of radioactive material, especially Argon and Radium, with smaller amounts of Uranium also present. We are currently searching for the exact location of the radio signals, but our work has been hindered by these radiation levels, meaning that the crew is confined to the ship whilst we send out probes to investigate. I now hand the report over to my second-in-command, Major Dwight Wallace, to report on the findings of the probes thus far. (sound of shuffling and indistinct voices) WALLACE: This is Major Dwight Wallace, second-in-command of the CSC Clarke. (pause) So far, we have successfully dispatched two of the five Thales-class rovers aboard, operated by remote control from the ship and recharged via their on-board solar batteries. (pause) Our first rover, Thales-1, travelled in a north-easterly direction across what can only be described as desert, until it reached a river roughly 3 metres deep and completely brown in appearance. At the command of Colonel LeBay, Thales-1 dispatched her onboard hydrobot - Sulis - to investigate this river. The water was shown to contain traces of Rubidium that had been introduced artificially to the water in large quantities, but was otherwise safe. Unfortunately, an unexpected sandstorm suddenly engulfed the area, resulting in the loss of both Thales-1 and Sulis. The second rover, Thales-2, was released the following day, and followed the route of the river until it reached what can only be described as some form of city. Anyone who's seen photos of the bombing of Chicago during World War Four will understand what this city looks like to us. The building appeared to largely comprise skyscrapers and tower blocks, but Thales-2 also found a site not unlike a spaceport, with four wrecked spacecraft of an unknown design still in the hangars. Upon closer inspection, we found signs of a possible native language carved onto metal plaques in the walls. For this, I hereby hand over to our linguistics expert, Dr. Hilda Lemming. (shuffling) LEMMING: This is Dr. Hilda Lemming of the University of New Florida, serving as linguistics officers aboard the CSC Clarke. (pause) With the consent of Colonel LeBay, I took screenshots of the six plaques at the spaceport via the on-board cameras fitted onto Thales-2, so that I could examine the language via print-outs whilst the crew continued locating the source of the radio-signals. (clears throat) The script used by whatever lifeforms that dwelled on this planet is almost an exact replica of the Runic script used in medieval Iceland, but translation has been difficult, as findings appear to suggest that the native alphabet featured three variants of the letter "A" and did include the letters "Q" or "W" in literature. When the individual letters are translated, the words themselves must be translated again from a language that bears a very strong resemblance to Welsh Gaelic. (shuffling of papers) The first plaque discovered simply read as follows: "All arriving spacecraft please report to Immigration Offices for admission onto Genus." The other plaques read along similar lines, but fail to tell us what became of this city or why the radiation levels are unusually high. I now return the report back to Colonel LeBay for the completion of this report and to make any minor notes left to be said. (indistinct voices) LEBAY: The ruined city mentioned by Major Wallace and Dr. Lemming shows strong traces of the radio signal we have been asked to investigate, but otherwise there is no sign of life here whatsoever. (pause) There is the suggestion that life may have once dwelled here, but in what form we cannot be certain. But concerning the mission, it is our aim over the coming days to dispatch Thales-3 to aid Thales-2 in the search for whatever is omitting these erratic signals and beaming them to the Earth. This is Colonel Curtis LeBay of the CSC Clarke signing off. END OF TRANSCRIPT REPORT FILED: Rowan Sheridan. Controller, McCain Space Center - Commonwealth Administration for Space Activities (CASA).
